Every city that we've lived in, (Greensboro, Seattle, Philadelphia, now San Francisco) seems to have it's own face. They have their own fashion sense, in how the houses interact with the rest of the city. Lots of times there are scenes that could only come from one place. Philly had its quaint, 200 plus year-old brick trinities, with slave quarters below, with smokestacks in the background, and elevated trains and bridges and freeways everywhere. The commute was all in-your-face. Seattle was row on row of houses, with downtown being worn like a cheap skirt, and industry, where it was present, was small and out of the way, down by the statiums, relegated to "almost Tacoma"
San Francsico is much more about real-estate. Anything that can have a house sitting on it, has a house sitting on it. I'm sure there are houses on top of houses in places. Except the bald tops of Twin Peaks, which are free from development, (other than TV towers,) so that the tourists can continue to take in the incredible view (of Oakland.) I'm often struck when driving home, how you can see into the windows of the houses (people leave the blinds open to catch the view,) and how a blue glow of a TV is in every window.
Of course, this isn't a real landscape, like all of these commute sketches, they are "fantasies."
